NPTEL is an acronym for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning which is an initiative by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and science. NPTEL provides E-learning through online Web and Video courses in Engineering, Science and Humanities streams.

SWAYAM (Study Web of Active Learning by Young and Aspiring Minds) is the National MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) portal being developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. This effort aims to take the best teaching-learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

NPTEL is the official SWAYAM national coordinator for engineering. NPTEL online certification courses are SWAYAM courses too and they are available on the SWAYAM platform as well
